The curtain is about to come up on Jean Paul Sabatier’s first venture as a co-owner. For more than a decade he’s been an employee, helping others run hotspots like Rappahannock Oyster Bar, Compass Rose, and Maydan. In the final weeks leading up to Jane Jane’s debut in the Liz development on 14th Street NW, Sabatier sat down to write a training manual for the people he hopes will make the 850-square-foot cocktail lair special.

If you’ve been dreaming of a cozy neighborhood bar where you can pop in for a delicious cocktail and a snack or three, you’re not alone. Pre-pandemic, and certainly now, that’s the kind of place longtime friends and DC hospitality vets Jean Paul (J.P.) Sabatier, Ralph Brabham, and Drew Porterfield envision opening together. And in a few months, they will do just that—with some Covid-era adjustments. Jane Jane, an 860-square-foot nook of a bar on 14th Street, is set to debut this fall with a retro-chic vibe and Southern cocktail hour classics.

The three friends were inspired to open Jane Jane after the success of the Southern-inspired pop-up ‘Dot’s Spot,’ which they hosted on the patio of BKK Cookshop in 2017. Their desire to create a place that serves well-crafted classic cocktails, Southern-inspired snacks, with welcoming, inclusive hospitality were the driving factors behind the decision to open Jane Jane.
